Are satellite data speeds as fast as I get at home?
Satellite internet service is not as fast as a land-based connection. But for those who need higher data speeds, it is possible to get a VSAT system with download speeds up to 5-20 Mbps. A BGAN satellite system may have a download speed closer to 464 Kbps. (For reference, streaming a video requires 1.5-5 Mbps.)
How far offshore can I get cellular service?
Cellular service range will be dependent on the service provider, location, equipment, and weather. Most coasts in the US will have coverage up to 10-20 miles offshore, making cellular internet options viable for most coastal cruising.
How large are the satellite internet domes?
A VSAT satellite dome is usually 15-36+ inches in diameter. A BGAN satellite dome is smaller, usually 11-27 inches in diameter.
What does the hardware installation process look like?
For larger domes, we will inspect the vessel and make an installation plan before equipment purchase. For the smaller antenna, a pre-inspection of the vessel is not necessary. A marine electrician will do installations.
